A Story of Hope: Susan K. Ngala’s Journey from Loss to Faith

A Story of Hope: Susan K. Ngala’s Journey from Loss to Faith
Compiled by Rev. Isaiah Kimani | Interviewed by Peter Thuranira, Volunteer GCW Ambassador – Mombasa GCW

In the heart of Mombasa County, a young girl named Susan Kailu Ngala carries a story filled with both sorrow and hope. Born on June 14, 2006, in Kamulu Village, Kitui County, Susan’s early life was marked by tragedy. The death of her father in 2014 and her mother in 2017, both due to illness, left her orphaned at a young age.

Susan & Guardian

Originally a student at Muambani Primary School in Kitui County, Susan's life changed dramatically after losing her parents. She moved to Mombasa County, where she has since been under the care of her uncle and continues her education at Kwa Shee Junior Secondary School, currently in Grade Seven.

Despite the painful losses, Susan’s life has been transformed through the generous support of people who have stepped in as a source of help and encouragement. In an interview with GCW Ambassador Peter Thuranira, Susan shared how the care she’s received has made a real impact:

“The clothes have helped me look smart and beautiful, just like others who have parents. The food provided has made hunger a thing of the past—it’s no longer a worry,” Susan shared, with a quiet strength in her voice.

Her joy extends beyond material support. The simple act of being visited and remembered has lifted her spirit.

“I feel good,” she says with a smile when asked how she feels during visits from the GCW team.

More than just physical needs, Susan testifies to the spiritual impact of the time spent with caring volunteers and supporters:

“It has strengthened my faith and trust in God, knowing that things will get better,” she said.

When asked how she sees God working in her life, her answer speaks volumes about gratitude and recognition of grace:

“I’ve seen God at work through the educational materials I’ve received from people who aren’t my parents—it’s a sign of God’s care.”

Her closing words are heartfelt and simple:

“I want to say thank you so much.”

Susan’s story reminds us that every act of kindness—every meal, every school supply, every visit—is not just provision, but a divine touch in the life of a child in need. We thank all who continue to support orphan children like Susan, bringing hope and dignity where it is most needed.

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work through local partners in each country that provide oversight and distribution of care through three care initiatives; Home-Based Care, Education, and Nutrition. In 2022, we launched our Church Mobilization Initiative by which we are mobilizing the local church to care for orphan children.

Beyond the financial commitment of co-hosting Great Commandment Workshops, this effort is Indigenous, self-propagating, and self-supporting.  Our objective is to engage local churches to expand our GO! network, mobilize the church body to serve orphaned children, and advance the Kingdom by demonstrating the Gospel to others.  Through these workshops, we are:

Church Mobilization is our newest initiative launched in February 2022.  We are currently working with local area churches to co-host Great Commandment Workshops where we bring together multiple subject matter experts to discuss the why and how to serve the poor generally, and orphan children specifically.  We track the impact of children served through this through local GO! teams in each country.

We have co-hosted and facilitated thirty-three workshops in Africa & Asia, where we have hosted more than 5,000 ministry leaders. At the conclusion of these workshops, we have been honored to commission more than 4,000 GO! Ambassadors. GO! Ambassadors are those who have received the call to serve orphan children in their communities during these one-day workshops and have made a commitment to serve children in their community. We encourage them in their journey to serve others each month. In addition, we provide additional training and encouragement through our online Great Commandment Academy.

In April 2025, this GO! Ambassador Network served 11,558 orphan children.
