A Revival of Hope: Aweil Town Celebrates a Water Miracle

A Revival of Hope: Aweil Town Celebrates a Water Miracle

By Rt. Rev. Garang Chan Majok | Executive Director, Christ Mission to the World

Dear Beloved Family at 200 Orphanages Worldwide,

Grace and peace to you in the unfailing name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Your latest message and the incredible news of full funding for the Water Yard Expansion have set our entire mission in Aweil Town, South Sudan, ablaze with praise. On behalf of Christ Mission to the World (CMW), our local congregations, and the orphaned children whose lives you continue to refresh, we extend our deepest, most exuberant thanks.

From the first dollar you sent, you have lived out Proverbs 11:25:

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Through your compassion, an entire orphanage and its surrounding community are being transformed. Let me share just a glimpse of the cascade of blessings your partnership has made possible:

Concrete Pit Latrines

  • Safe, ventilated stalls have eliminated open defecation for hundreds.

  • Girls’ school attendance has increased by 15%, and this term, no girls have dropped out due to menstrual stigma—a powerful shift in dignity and access.

Aweil Town Borehole

  • Over 2,000 people across three neighborhoods now enjoy clean, reliable water—24 hours a day.

  • Women, once burdened by 4- to 5-hour water treks, now attend literacy classes, grow kitchen gardens, and run tailoring businesses that sustain their families.

  • At night, the gentle hum of the borehole has become a lullaby of God’s provision, soothing the weary and refreshing the hopeful.

Newly Funded Water Yard Expansion

  • Thanks to your most recent gift, the borehole will soon be a fully functional water yard featuring:

    • A 10,000-liter elevated tank

    • A solar-powered submersible pump

    • Eight tap-stands across the compound

  • Water availability will triple, queues will vanish, and—for the first time ever—the orphanage and surrounding homes will enjoy running water on demand.

  • Engineers have already placed the equipment order. Installation begins the very week your funds arrive. We anticipate commissioning the system in July.

Gratitude Woven into Our Prayers

Every Wednesday evening, during intercession, Bishop Wilson lifts your name in prayer. Our congregation stretches out hands toward a map pinned on the mud-brick sanctuary wall, and together we declare:

“Blessed is the one who considers the poor; the Lord delivers him in times of trouble.”Psalm 41:1

You are remembered, cherished, and celebrated in our songs and petitions.

A Benediction of Thanks

The Apostle Paul’s words to the Philippians reflect our hearts perfectly:

“I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel.”Philippians 1:3–5

May the Lord—who sees your quiet acts of kindness—reward you openly, enrich your storehouses, and flood your hearts with unshakable joy.

From the depths of our souls, thank you for funding the Water Yard, the Concrete Toilets, and the Borehole, and for sparking a revival of hope in South Sudan. Your generosity has written a new chapter of dignity, health, and hope for our children and communities.

With abiding gratitude, overflowing love, and unceasing prayers,

Feed the hungry and help those in trouble. Then your light will shine out from the darkness, and the darkness around you will be as bright as noon. Isa 58.10

In South Sudan, the drivers of food insecurity are prolonged dry spells, closure of trade routes between Sudan and South Sudan that have affected market functionality and led to high food prices, low household income and purchasing power, and the influx of returnees and refugees from Sudan.

The deterioration is mainly driven by the ongoing depletion of harvested stocks, reduced access to milk as livestock migrate in search of water and pasture, gradual increase of food prices, continued closure of trade routes between Sudan and South Sudan that will result in high food prices, reduced income at household level, and the influx of returnees and refugees from Sudan.

The risk factors to monitor during the project periods include the influx of returnees and refugees from Sudan, impacts of the conflict in Sudan on the state’s markets, high food prices, seasonal deterioration of road networks during the rainy season and associated impacts on market functionality, rainfall performance, cattle-related conflicts and insecurity, and election related insecurity fears.

Northern Bahr El Ghazal State has five counties with an estimated total population of 1.9 million. An estimated 255,129 cases with acute malnutrition need nutrition services in the State. Over one million children in South Sudan are likely to face extreme levels of malnutrition in the first half of 2024, cautions the World Food Programme (WFP).

Global Orphan Relief (GO!) in partnership with Christ Mission to the World (CMW) establishes feeding centres at village schools to provide meals to orphan children which has inspired many orphan children to attend school.

Children at Luethwek, South Sudan, receiving meals.

We have served in South Sudan since 2016 and have provided an estimated 2.5 million meals, impacting more than 3,200 children in South Sudan. The scale of this initiative has grown by over 7 times since our launch in 2016, and this growth is driven by the near-famine conditions, the influx of refugees from Sudan, and other socio-economic challenges in this country.

In cooperation with partners, Kids for the Kingdom, Christ Mission to the World, and 200 Orphanages, there has been $183,000 invested in four school sites since October 2020. This investment provides for clean water, kitchens, storerooms, and latrines, all of which allow for cost-effective distribution of food aid in these communities.

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work through local in-country partners that provide oversight and distribution of care.

In 2025, we are working to stabilize our funding for this project and will begin planning for further capital improvements for the locations where we currently provide food aid.
