A Journey of Hope: The Story of Peter Ochieng Agwenge – Mombasa County
Interviewed By: Peter Thuranira, Volunteer GCW Ambassador – Mombasa GCW
Compiled By: Rev. Isaiah Kimani
Meet Peter Ochieng Agwenge
“I am Peter Ochieng Agwenge, 18 years old, born in Homa Bay County, Kenya,” begins Peter, with quiet strength and honesty. His life journey has been filled with deep pain, but also remarkable resilience and hope.
Peter’s parents, Harrison Agwonge Polo and Monica Atieno Achacha, were both from Homa Bay County. Sadly, Peter lost his father in 2009 and his mother in 2020 due to HIV/AIDS, leaving him and his three siblings orphaned. He is now the eldest of the four, with two sisters and a younger brother who is only eight years old.
Peter started school in 2010, but the tragic loss of his parents forced him to drop out. Without financial support for food or school fees, life quickly became a daily struggle. “After their deaths, I became a total orphan,” he shares.
Eventually, his uncle welcomed him into his home, giving Peter a second chance at education. Despite facing persistent challenges, including inconsistent attendance due to lack of school fees, Peter never gave up on his dream. He is currently in Form 2 at St. Irine Nairobi School, now staying with his aunt. His journey remains difficult, but his spirit is grounded in faith.
“Despite everything, I believe that God will one day make a way for me and my family. All I ask for is your prayers, because without God, I cannot do anything.”
— Peter Ochieng Agwenge
Peter's Reflections: A Glimpse Through the Interview
Q: How has the support, like food, clothes, and school fees, helped you enjoy a better life and do well in school?
A: My school fees are paid, which saves me from being sent home. I eat and drink like everyone else, despite being an orphan. I’m always dressed smartly, just like the others.
Q: How do you feel when I visit you?
A: I feel very, very good.
Q: How has the time we’ve spent together helped you know God better?
A: Prayer and trusting God have become part of my daily life.
Q: Can you share any ways you’ve seen God working through the help you’ve received?
A: Being fed, clothed, and educated by people who aren’t related to me is a miracle and a sign of God’s work.
Q: What are your comments to all those who have been supporting you and your family?
A: Thank you so much. Please continue helping others like me. If God helps me, I will also help others one day.
Closing Thoughts
Peter's story is not just one of tragedy, but also of unwavering faith and the power of compassion. Through the loving hands of strangers, he has found a glimmer of stability in the storm. His dream is not only to survive, but to thrive — and one day, to give back.
Let Peter’s life be a testimony to what God can do through the hands of those willing to help. Your prayers, support, and encouragement are making a real difference.
"Let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." — Galatians 6:9
Please continue to pray for Peter and his siblings — and remember, every act of kindness is a seed of hope planted in someone’s future.

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work through local partners in each country that provide oversight and distribution of care through three care initiatives; Home-Based Care, Education, and Nutrition. In 2022, we launched our Church Mobilization Initiative by which we are mobilizing the local church to care for orphan children.
Beyond the financial commitment of co-hosting Great Commandment Workshops, this effort is Indigenous, self-propagating, and self-supporting. Our objective is to engage local churches to expand our GO! network, mobilize the church body to serve orphaned children, and advance the Kingdom by demonstrating the Gospel to others. Through these workshops, we are:
Church Mobilization is our newest initiative launched in February 2022. We are currently working with local area churches to co-host Great Commandment Workshops where we bring together multiple subject matter experts to discuss the why and how to serve the poor generally, and orphan children specifically. We track the impact of children served through this through local GO! teams in each country.
We have co-hosted and facilitated thirty-three workshops in Africa & Asia, where we have hosted more than 5,000 ministry leaders. At the conclusion of these workshops, we have been honored to commission more than 4,000 GO! Ambassadors. GO! Ambassadors are those who have received the call to serve orphan children in their communities during these one-day workshops and have made a commitment to serve children in their community. We encourage them in their journey to serve others each month. In addition, we provide additional training and encouragement through our online Great Commandment Academy.
In April 2025, this GO! Ambassador Network served 11,558 orphan children.
