Love in Asia

Love in Asia

April 13, 2024

by Scott Nordstrom

As most of you know, I spent several weeks in Asia this past March. This was a very productive time as we could see the Kingdom advancing through the local people.

We held four Great Commandment Workshops that were attended by 601 ministry leaders, of which 337 were commissioned as GO! Ambassadors to serve orphan children in their communities. As I witnessed the deployment of the local church to serve orphan children I was encouraged. It was a beautiful thing to witness!

After one such meeting, we headed out to a local orphanage to bless the children with food. I was told that this was an orphanage for special needs children. I honestly had reservations about this visit. Our schedule had been very packed up to this point, and we were flying out to another country early the next day. Beyond this, selfishly, I was desiring to protect my own heart.

What I witnessed at this orphanage ran by four Catholic nuns was incredible. This place, with 20 special needs girls, was filled with joy and these children were happy too.

I was so impressed with these Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. These children captured my heart and I left this place blessed. I had witnessed love in Asia.

This facility is not funded by the Catholic Church, but they did send these nuns to care for the children. Mostly, this place receives its support locally -from mostly the surrounding community who are non-Christian. God uses all kinds of people to fulfill His purpose!

Sister Rita who has served there for many years is the Director of the orphanage, but she is being reposted to a leper colony in another part of Asia in the coming months.

One of the local churches that attended a Great Commandment Workshop is planning for building a deeper relationship with this home and serving their regularly.

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work to date through local partners in each country that provides oversight and distribution of care through three care initiatives; Home-Based Care, Education, and Nutrition. In 2022, we launched our Church Mobilization Initiative where we are mobilizing the local church to care for orphan children. We impacted 13,258 children last month in Asia (unnamed country), Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan, South Sudan, and Zambia within these four initiatives.

Beyond the financial commitment of the workshops, this effort is to be indigenous, self-propagating, and self-supporting.  Our objective is to engage local churches to expand our GO! network, mobilize the church body to serve orphaned children and to advance the Kingdom through demonstrating the Gospel to others.  Through these workshops, we are:

In our Church Mobilization Initiative, we are currently working with local area churches to co-host Great Commandment Workshops where we bring together multiple subject matter experts to discuss the why and how to serve the poor generally, and orphan children more specifically.  We track the impact of children served through this effort to justify continued investment.

We have co-hosted and facilitated twenty-six workshops in Africa and Asia where we have hosted 4,633 ministry leaders. After holding these workshops, we have been honored to commission 2,975 GO! Ambassadors. GO! Ambassadors are those who have received the call to serve orphan children during these one-day workshops and have made a commitment to serve children in their community.
