October 2023 GO! Ambassador of the Month | Kenya | A Roof Over Your Head in Kenya

December 7, 2023

by GO! Kenya Team

Shelter is one of the basic needs that is required in our day-to-day lives. Not everyone is lucky to have a roof over their heads. We shall be walking with Mr. Joram Mwanguo from Kasigau, who will be telling us how he was able to give a widow with her 8 orphans a roof over their head.

Joram Mwanguo is a 56-year-old pastor at Presbyterian Central Mission of Africa Church at Kasigau in Voi Sub-county. He heads the Taita and Taveta Parishes.

Pastor Joram Mwanguo

Joram enjoys supporting orphans and the less privileged because he was supported when he was young. Joram is from a humble background. His first school shoes were given to him when he was in form three, by a student who had cleared form four. After sitting for his form four exam, he was to go for his certificates which were withheld due to a fee balance of 500 Kenya Shillings ($ 3.26 USD). The church raised the money, and he was able to get his certificates and became a teacher. When he started teaching, he had the desire to start helping the needy and the vulnerable in the school he was teaching.

Before attending the Great Commandment Workshop, I was supporting orphan children on a small scale. I was supporting the orphans casually whenever I could.

After the workshop, Joram gained the knowledge of how to serve the orphans in his community and was triggered to attend to the needs of the orphans more.

Local Community serving Widow-led household with 8 children.

He has supported a widow with 8 children from within Kasigau community to construct a house. He was touched by her story and decided to pull strings with others and shelter her. The widow lacked a proper house to live with her 8 children after she lost her husband. The Great Commandment Workshop has helped me recognize the good work I am doing and helped me understand the importance of supporting orphans and keeping the data. Your monthly follow-up has also made me commit myself more.

At times he does not have money to assist but he always finds a way out. Income in the village is very low therefore it’s a challenge for them to support. He has committed his pastoral allowances to support the orphans. When it's not enough he calls for a collection (fundraiser) from the church members. He also goes ahead to advertise it on social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. By the grace of God well-wishers who see the adverts, willingly donate the funds.

Pastor Joram shares, “I would urge the entire community to see to the needs of the orphans, especially in terms of their education. Education will make them self-reliant and it will reduce the dependency ratio.”

Well done Pastor Joram our October 2023 GO! Ambassador of the Month in Kenya!

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work to date through local partners in each country that provides oversight and distribution of care through three care initiatives; Home-Based Care, Education, and Nutrition, In 2022, we launched our Church Mobilization Initiative where we are mobiizing the local church to care for orphan children. Last month, we impacted 13,860 children in Asia (unnamed country), Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan, South Sudan, and Zambia within these four initiatives.

Beyond the financial commitment of the workshops, this effort is to be indigenous, self-propagating, and self-supporting.  Our objective is to engage local churches to expand our GO! network, mobilize the church body to serve orphaned children, and to advance the Kingdom through demonstrating the Gospel to others.  Through these workshops we are:

Church Mobilization is our newest initiative launched in February 2022.  We are currently working with local area churches to co-host Great Commandment Workshops where we bring together multiple subject matter experts to discuss the why and how to serve the poor generally, and orphan children specifically.  We track the impact of children served through this effort to justify continued investment.

We have co-hosted and facilitated twenty-two workshops in Asia, Kenya, and Zambia that have hosted a total of 4,032 ministry leaders. At the conclusion of these workshops, we have been honored to commission 2,638 GO! Ambassadors. GO! Ambassadors are those who have received the call to serve orphan children in their communities during these one-day workshops and make a commitment to serve children in their community. In October, this GO! Ambassador Network served 12,228 orphan children.
