Pupils of Beliek primary school have testified that the feeding programme they have been receiving from their school has improved their learning skills and personal hygiene. During a visit to Beliek this week, a group interview held for primary two pupils had positive responses from the learners. Pupils say their meals is keeping them motivated and making them different from the rest of the schools who are lacking these privileges.

James Wek, a 14-year old boy of Beliek primary school confirmed that his life status has changed because he can now read and write. He also says he has now known personal hygiene.

“My life has changed and improved a lot because I can now read and write. I’m happy to be here with these privileges.” Wek wholeheartedly expresses his gratitude for the support and testified that he will not forget the support he is getting from GO!.

Athiep Kuol, is a 10-year old girl who is also in primary two says she is more excited to be part of Beliek primary school which is being supported by GO and that she will use the opportunity to grow in faith of Christ and help her poor family when she becomes educated. Athiep hails from a poor family with her mum being a widow whose life has been very difficult. She explains that getting a daily meal from their house with other siblings has been so difficult and that it forced her and her mum to be surviving on street by begging, but upon admission to the school in Beliek, she is gaining momentum with her family. She looks forward to upgrade her vulnerability status in her community.

Despite being taught in an open area under a tree, pupils in this school look more excited with the feeding programme where they feel more comfortable to be having meals and continue their teaching under trees rather than attending school without feeding.

They say they will utilize the opportunity to grow in faith, gain knowledge and help their personal hygiene especially from starvation which is rampant in South Sudan during rainy season, which occurs from May to August each year.

In this school there are always hopes that the outcomes here will have three key factors of; one, personal hygiene, two, academic success, and three, Faith in Christ. Following the new recruitment of new qualified teachers, pupils hope of success in their upcoming school calendar and that they later use the opportunity to help others.

Beliek Primary School is having a GO! Building of a two-room building which will be used as a store and kitchen for the school. Construction of latrines will begin in the coming days that will benefit the children and school staff. There are no actual classrooms at this school as teaching takes place under trees. During rainy season, both pupils and teachers are challenged.

In South Sudan, education is facing enormous challenges with the lack of qualified teachers, and little funding to effectively operate local schools. Most schools lack basic requirements like school buildings, toilets, food, and clean drinking water. Even with sub-standard education available to some, attendance is not guaranteed for these children.

Plans for 2021 is to provide nutrition to more vulnerable children in the Aweil area, increasing the number of children served by 54% over 2020. In cooperation with multiple partners, we have developed these school sites with infrastructure over the last 6-months by investing $105,200 during this time for kitchens, storerooms, and latrines.

Today we currently feed 2,646 vulnerable children in South Sudan, and with our partner Christ Mission to the World, we will serve an estimated 52,920 meals at three village schools in the Aweil area this month.

You may send support or other correspondence to Global Orphan Relief, 16352 Prairie Farm Cir, Parker, CO 80134 or you may give also give electronically to support the feeding of vulnerable children at 2021 South Sudan Nutrition.
