Lueth-wek Village School Experiencing Pressure

AWEIL, SOUTH SUDAN

As hunger looms in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state, the number of admitted children increased at Lueth-wek Village School. Children say their livelihoods have improved by the Global Orphan Relief (GO!) nutrition project provided at the school.

At least 1,102 children have been registered so far making the Lueth-wek Village School one of the most highly populated schools now getting support from GO!. This is an increase of 198 children since earlier this year. South Sudan is entering the time of year when food is especially scarce in the bush.

Philip Piol says they're overwhelmed with turnout and that the school has strategized in selecting most vulnerable children to avoid adding too many children and jeopardizing the nutritional value of the meals provided with diminished portions.

Currently at Lueth-wek, 1,102 pupils are benefiting from this Nutrition initiative with funding from American people. and other parts of the globe, to insure that over 3,000 pupils get their meals daily at the three schools now enrolled in this partnership. The three schools are located in villages near Aweil, South Sudan; Adoor, Beliek, and Lueth-wek.

As part of their attendance at these village schools the children receive a basic education, the Gospel from the Word of God, and nutritional support in terms of school lunch meal being provided.

In the first four months of 2021 we have experienced a dramatic increase in the number of children coming to our partner schools to receive meals. In the first four months of this year we have provided an estimated 209,040 meals impacting 2,613 children. The scale of this initiative has grown by more than 200% when compared to 2020 when we served just an estimated 68,140 meals to 852 vulnerable children.

Education in South Sudan is facing enormous challenges with the lack of qualified teachers, and little funding to effectively operate local schools. Most schools lack basic requirements like classrooms, toilets, food, and clean drinking water. Even with sub-standard education available to these children, attendance is not guaranteed for these based on the resources available today to a growing number of children.

Plans for 2021 is to provide nutrition to more vulnerable children in the Aweil area, increasing the number of children served as compared to 2020. In cooperation with multiple partners (Kids for the Kingdom & Christ Mission to the World), we have developed these school sites with infrastructure over the last 6-months by investing $109,200 during this time for kitchens, storerooms, and latrines.

Today we serve these precious children with our partner Christ Mission to the World who are the hands and feet on the ground, and through this partnership we will serve an estimated 52,920 meals at three village schools in the Aweil area this month.
