Victor’s Surgery

Update Zambia  |  Victor  |  Lusaka, Zambia

From Linda Jones in Zambia:  I arrived at Beit Cure Hospital at the time I thought Victor would be returning to his bed after surgery.  To my surprise I found Mama Mary and Victor all packed up and ready to go. She explained to me that because of Victor’s breathing he could not have surgery, and would need to return in 10-days.  I could hardly believe my ears.

I went to the nurses desk and ask to see the Doctor.  They told me he was in Surgery, but if I could wait he would see me when he was available.  Hours passed when he came and sat with me to explain that Victor’s breathing was really bad.  So bad in fact, they felt he could not be put under anesthesia.  I shared that Victor’s breathing was the best it has been in a while, and that he had just come off a dose of Antibiotic the day before we arrived.  I then shared that if he could not be put under anesthesia today then he could not be put under in 10-days when I brought him back because his breathing will not be any better.  I explained that we need help here; for Victor’s sake.

The hospital is about 6-7 hours from the House of Faith Orphanage so a returned trip would be time consuming, expensive, and with a child that would not have an improved breathing situation.

He asked me to not allow Victor to have any lunch, and he would take him in for surgery in the afternoon after 2:00pm.  He would only give Victor a small dose of meds and see if there was a problem putting a tube in his throat.  If it looked clear he would do the adenoid surgery.  They took Victor and Mama Mary in at about 1:00 to prepare them and Mama Mary came out about 3:00 as they took Victor in to surgery.

We waited and about 5:00pm he came rolling in on a stretcher very much still asleep.  The surgery went well.  I could tell the next day when he was released his breathing wasn’t making sounds like before.  We travel back to Lusaka on the 16th of January for his review.  I look forward to hearing what was seen in his throat.  I feel it must be good because they went ahead and did the surgery.  Keep Victor in your prayers he has many hurdles to jump, but is on the right path.

Victor Munachoonga was born on February 13, 2014.  He arrived at the House of Faith (HOFO) on June 29, 2015.  He was brought to us very sick and we were told that his mother was not well.  She was not properly caring for him, so he is with us under temporary care via Social Welfare in Kalomo.  He only weighed 6 Kg when he arrived.  Victor had been in the hospital 3 times and had many visits to the clinic before ever arriving at HOFO.  According to Social Welfare, Victor has CP and deals with throat problems which required the recent surgery.

Victor is gaining weight since coming to HOFO and is improving based on daily physical therapy with Flyness.  Providing care for special needs children like Victor can be quite challenging on many fronts so please pray for his recovery and continued development.

NEED:  Zambia is a country of nearly 14 million people with an orphan population of approximately 1.4 million.  Many of these children remain with extended family and most of these extended families have biological children as well.  Ultimately, when resources don’t allow for food, clothing, and education as needed, these orphan children are last in line -not having the same rights as the other children.

Through October 2016 we have provided funding of $818,658 that has been invested in capital infrastructure, program development, and for the care of the children.  Today we serve 300 children in Zambia through various means; home-based care, foster care, education scholarships, and feeding programs.
