A Church in a Tavern: A Memorable Visit to Likasi
by Scott Nordstrom
Though we no longer serve in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I often reflect on the incredible experiences I had during my visit there in 2009. I had the privilege of traveling with one of our board members, Mike Dee, and the Noah Ministries team of three. Among the many impactful moments of that trip, one stands out vividly—the day I preached in a church that wasn’t really a church.
In the heart of Likasi, the local community had found an unexpected gathering place for worship—a tavern. The owners, persuaded by the townspeople, agreed to let them use the space for church services in the afternoons before opening their doors to serve drinks in the evening. When we arrived, I was amazed to see the place completely packed, with people seated right up to where I stood.

I shared the Word that day, though I can’t say it was anything particularly special. But what happened next left a lasting impression on my heart. As I concluded, I invited anyone in need of prayer to come forward. To my surprise, the room emptied. I turned to one of our team members, confused by the response, and she motioned for me to follow her.
Stepping outside, I was met with an incredible sight—a single-file line of church members stretching out the door, waiting for prayer. For the next two-plus hours, we had the honor of praying for each person who came forward. The presence of the Lord filled the place, and we saw His hand move among the people in a powerful way.
By the time we finished, we were able to exit just before the first round of drinks was served. But what mattered most was that, for those few hours, that tavern had transformed into a house of God—a place where faith was strengthened, hearts were touched, and lives were blessed.
Below are scenes from our time in the DR Congo including our time in Likasi.
Though our work has taken us elsewhere, this experience remains a beautiful reminder that the presence of God is not confined to a building. Wherever people gather to seek Him—whether in a grand cathedral or a humble tavern—He is there.
