Guts & Gala

2023 Guts & Gala

by Scott Nordstrom

July 25, 2023

Have you ever thrown a party and no one showed up? Well, I can’t say that I have, however, I did host a ministry gathering at my home many years ago, and other than one board member and our guest of honor, I had one other person come to hear about South Sudan and the struggles for children there.

Now, I honestly did a very poor job in informing people of the event, but I was still mortified and felt poorly for Bishop Garang, which brings me to present day.

Coincidently, Bishop Garang will be our keynote speaker at your 2023 Beautiful Child Gala. We have been serving with Bishop Garang going back to 2016. We work with him to feed orphan children in the Aweil area of South Sudan and with this partnership we have served an estimated 1.9 million meals since our start.

As you can imagine, these Gala events are stressful, there is much time spent in planning and execution, and Bishop Garang will be traveling here from Kenya to share with all those in attendance at our 2023 event. This event is just as much Guts than Gala! Many will be working on making this evening a night that you will remember. I don’t think you want to miss this, and I know that I don’t want you to!

The other thing, Bishop Garang has an interesting story. He was once a Lost Boy who walked across South Sudan, from west to east, to an Ethiopian refugee camp where he learned English and learned about Jesus. This journey required him to eat leaves off of bushes and he spent some time in the Nile River.

The Lost Boys of Sudan refers to a group of over 20,000 boys of the Nuer and Dinka ethnic groups who were displaced or orphaned during the Second Sudanese Civil War (1987–2005). The boys embarked on treacherous journeys to refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya where thousands were sheltered for several years. -per Lost Boys of Sudan

After coming of age, Garang decided to go back home to Aweil to share his new-found faith with his people. In addition to the humanitarian work that is accomplished through Christ Mission to the World, he now oversees more than 100 churches in South Sudan.

I consider Bishop Garang a friend and an inspiration. I have traveled to South Sudan with him so I have trusted him with my life. I would encourage you to join us in September for the Beautiful Child Gala -and just to hear from Bishop Garang would be worth it.
