Meet Emmanuel Amurono | Fortune Learners' Centre

Kenya / Kayole Slum -Nairobi

by Charles Owino, Director of Fortune Learners’ Centre & Emmanuel Amurono a student at FLC

My name is Charles Owino and I am the Director at Fortune Learners’ Centre (FLC), a nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to serving orphan and vulnerable children. Our school is located in Kayole, an informal settlement in Nairobi. I am happy to introduce you to one of the children served by FLC in partnership with Global Orphan Relief.

My name is Emmanuel Amurono, I am currently in class seven going to Fortune Learners’ Centre which is located in Kayole. I am 10 years old in age and the second born in a family of four. I live in Kayole with my mom, and it has just been the five of us ever since my dad sadly passed away. It was like a miracle, the first time I heard about the school was from my neighbor who happened to be a parent at Fortune Learners’ Centre who is a partner of Global Orphans Relief in Kenya. She encouraged my mum to stop keeping us in the house because Fortune was supported by GO! to serve orphan children.

A group of students having lunch during school holiday, Emmanuel sited in blue shirt.

We had been out of school for months since our dad was lost as he was the sole bread-winner. My mum was a housewife and could not raise the need funds to even enroll us in a government school due to entry fees. All the available schools were beyond her finances, food was also a luxury, and we could do with only one meal or no meal on some days.

Getting education and food courtesy of GO! at Fortune has been a big blessing. I feel like I'm more disciplined now as a student. I am currently doing well in my studies and strive to do much better. I have very dedicated teachers who are keen in ensuring that every student understands what is being taught and that they can comprehend it. I've regained hope in my life because I know that there's a chance for a better tomorrow. I now go to school every day and I don't have to worry about being chased away because of lack of school fees. I have also grown spiritually as a result of the weekly pastoral programs at the school, and by attending church regularly.

I have also grown healthy, the porridge and lunch has made me strong, I rarely fall sick as it used to be, and I now have no reason not to attend school. It is the opposite.

When I grow-up I want to be a teacher like our school director because I believe that he has touched so many people's lives.

I am praying for the GO! horizons to enlarge to impact more lives and thank to all those who trust and support the work they do.
