by Charles Owino, Director of Fortune Learners’ Centre

My name is Charles Owino and I am the Director at Fortune Learners Centre (FLC), a nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to serving orphans and vulnerable children. Our school is located in Kayole, an informal settlement in Nairobi. I am happy to introduce you to one of the orphan children served by FLC in partnership with Global Orphan Relief.

Naomi is age twelve and she is in Grade Five. Life has not been easy for her living without parents and feeding from hand to mouth with the little that her grandmother can provide.

At times, she has to go to sleep on an empty stomach with maybe only water to push through the long nights. Whenever sickness worsens for her grandmother, this only adds more challenges to the already vulnerable family. On more than one occasion, their family has been forcibly removed from the tiny room they rent as their debt escalates.

We learned about her situation from one of our parents who sympathized with her but was not able to help.

It is really hard to know how life was before I joined Fortune Learners’ Centre because I was very young back then but what I can remember is that eating was a big problem. I was also scared that I would never attend school.

I felt bad when I saw my cousins and friends attending school every day. Life was very hard because I was just sitting every day at home doing nothing, and this is the reason why at my age I am still at grade five instead of six or seven where my age mates are. I used to admire other children wearing uniforms to school and hoped that one day I would also be like them.

When I joined Fortune Learners’ Centre through a Global Orphans Relief Scholarship, it was my first time to wear school uniforms and also shoes.

Joining Fortune Learners’ Centre has made me make new friends and learn new things from my teachers every day. The teachers are really caring about the learners. I would like thank my sponsor and tell them that God will bless them because of their generosity.

Thanks to the partnership between Fortune Learners’ and Global Orphan Relief and their unrelenting supporters, she is now sure of two meals a day with her only worry being supper, but for someone who would go without food, two meals a day is a great relief! Naomi is a disciplined learner with a bright future ahead of her.

Naomi would like to be a veterinarian in future. She is so grateful for the support and have promised to work extra hard in her studies!

The generosity of Global Orphan Relief helps many more pupils like Naomi unlock their potential and follow their passion. Your support changes lives for the good.

When you choose to sponsor a child or provide support for GO’s Education Initiative, you aren’t simply helping a child, but you are impacting lives of many children, families and their entire community as they work towards a better future.

Today, we are supporting 322 orphan children through our Education Initiative with plans to increase this to 586 student recipients in Kenya & Zambia in 2023.

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work to date through local partners in each country that provides oversight and distribution of care.

As of November 2022, we serve 6,033 orphan children in Ethiopia, Kenya, Pakistan, South Sudan, and Zambia. We provide this aid through our Field Partner & GO! Ambassador networks in our Home-Based Care, Education, Nutrition & Church Mobilization Initiatives.
