Meet Emmanuel Odhiambo Aroko who attends Fortune Learners' Centre
INTERVIEW WITH A FORTUNE LEARNERS' STUDENT EMMANUEL ODHIAMBO AROKO
Meet Emmanuel Odhiambo Aroko a student who is currently studying at Fortune Learners’ Centre (FLC). The following interview with this student is to learn how attending school at FLC, based on a Global Orphan Relief (GO!) Scholarship, has impacted him.
Please share about where you live and your background
My name is Emmanuel Odhiambo Aroko. I live in Africana Court in Kayole with my Aunt and Uncle, and I have been living with them since I was three years old after my parents and I were involved in an accident which unfortunately they did not survive.
I did survive but I injured my eyes and I've had trouble with my eye ever since. After my parents passed on my Aunt adopted me and we moved from my rural home to Nairobi to come live with her.
When did you first find out about fortune learners' school
The first time I heard about FLC was from my friend who advised my Aunt to bring me to this school so I could finish my primary education. He knew about my situation back at home and how much my guardians were straining with keeping me in school. By this time I was not going to school for lack of school fees.
After that my Aunt brought me here and I've been learning since 2020.
What impact has FLC had on you
If I am being honest it has really been life changing. Before coming here I didn't even think it was possible to go to school without worrying about being sent home due to lack of fees, but being at FLC has changed all that and am so grateful to be able to focus on learning and finishing primary school.
FLC and Global Orphans has also greatly helped with easing the burden for my guardians because they are both casual workers and the money they get from their work is barely enough for paying fees for all of us together with my cousins.
Also being here has changed how I think and perceive life in the sense that am more motivated about achieving my dreams and goals in order to change my future and to ensure that I help my Aunt and Uncle like they've helped me.
What do you like about FLC
Unlike the school I was attending some time back, the teachers at FLC are really keen in ensuring that we grasp everything that they teach and also help us with revising for our exams. Apart from that, I've also improved so much in academics am a high achiever now and in the last exam we did I was number four in our class.
It also has changed how I relate with my peers because they not only teach about the core values of friendship and team work but also ensure we practice them in the classroom.
What is your future aim
When I grow up I would really like to be a footballer.
Given a chance what would you like to tell the sponsors that provide me the opportunity to continue in my education
I am so grateful for them and the huge difference that they are making in our lives. They are helping us regain hope in finishing our studies, especially me because before getting this scholarship I was rarely in school and missed a lot of school work because of lack of those fees.
