December 7, 2019 – My Experience in Zambia by Sidney Nordstrom

In 2008, at the age of 14, I was given the opportunity to visit Zambia with a small mission group and spend a couple of weeks at the House of Faith in Silembe. We were blessed enough to work one-on-one with the children and help build additions to the existing orphanage.

Though I didn’t realize it at the time, this experience would go on to shape the kind of person I’ve become. It’s a humbling thing, to be near these children. They’ve become accustomed to surviving off of the bare minimum, but even so, they don’t just survive. They live. They thrive.

As a 14 year old teenager, I was accustomed to a cushy life in which I always wanted more. I’d say that visiting Zambia put everything into perspective. To see children with barely anything, except a belly full of food and a roof over their head, exude such happiness was truly eye-opening. They’re full of light; eager to learn, eager to live. It’s one thing to hear about it, to donate every once and awhile (and it does make a difference), but seeing the good being done was an experience that I wouldn’t change for the world.

Caring for the Children

I recommend that every teenager/adult visit at least once if they can. We go to help them, but retroactively they help us.

— We have been serving in Zambia since 2006 and today assist 247 orphaned children in this country.  Starting in 2007, with our partner Noah Ministries, we developed the House of Faith  and the House of Hope orphanages where we care for children in a family setting.  You can support one of the precious children today!

We do plan on deploying a team to Zambia in July 2020.  You can learn more about this deployment here!
