GO! | Lueth-Wek School Launch Overwhelmed

As we communicated earlier this month, we launched our nutrition initiative at the Lueth-Wek Village School with our partner Christ Mission to the World (CMW) in South Sudan.  We had planned to serve 235 children through the end of 2020 based on our agreement with Kids for the Kingdom who provided the kitchen facilities.  We raised funds accordingly for this effort.

I was notified by Bishop Garang of CMW yesterday that the facilities and our capacity is being overwhelmed just two weeks after launch, “the number of children in Lueth-Wek village is more than 500 and there is a possibility that it may get 600 or more because of the starvation. We don’t know what to do because the food will get finished by next week at this rate of consumption. There is a need to increase the food supply for the centre.”  As of July 15th we are feeding 608 vulnerable children at Lueth-Wek.

Bishop Garang’s team has demonstrated incredible operational efficiency as the feeding centres do not turn-away hungry children and our funding has not always kept pace with the increased need over time.  At various times of the year, and depending on where the children stay, the meal at school could be their only nutrition of the day.

Typically, we are providing 5 lunches per week per child.  The increase to 608 children will increase the number of meals to be provided by over 1.5 times.  Regrettably, this is not something we can simply absorb at this time based on the costs and funding available, and would prefer to provide nutrition throughout the month rather than less than half of the month based on our current food supply.

To feed the additional 373 children we are in the need of $6,667 which will provide food for these children through the end of the year.  We do have a $1,000 commitment already which will take us through the end of the month with the additional children.  Due to the urgency of the funding needed you can provide your support at GLOBAL ORPHAN RELIEF and select Nutrition Initiative under ‘Fund’.

Christ Mission to the World and Global Orphan Relief have been supporting children with food, education, and the Word of God in every centre located at these three areas (Adoor, Beliek, and now Lueth-Wek), since February 2016, where we have invested $179,700 to provide an estimated 480,000 meals. With the addition of Lueth-Wek Village school we expect to feed over 1,550 children this month, and turnout is expected to continue to increase as hunger looms in South Sudan.  They come to school to receive a meal as this is the main survival option and the only source for many of these children.

Global Orphan Relief has been serving orphaned children since 2005.  We have accomplished this work to date through local partners in each country that facilitates distribution of care.

With the latest school launch in Lueth-wek, South Sudan, we will serve 1,966 children this month in DR Congo, Pakistan, South Sudan, and Zambia within our Home-based Care, Scholarship, and Nutrition initiatives.  Our partnership in Kenya has been suspended due to COVID-19 school closures.
