GO! | Fortune Learners Centre
I am a privileged man. Not in the sense that I’m wealthy (I am as poor as anyone else), but I have the privilege of being in contact with people and organizations like Global Orphan Relief, who have the capacity to help orphans and vulnerable children. My past has contributed largely to what I find myself doing today. Growing up as an orphan under the care of a poor widow, who also cared for seven other children, I saw, lived, and experienced real poverty. I had nobody who made my schooling a priority; my mother preferred that I spend my nights fishing at the lake. At least, this way we would have food on the table. Nobody at the time had considered this to be child labour.
Though I tried to drop out of primary school on three separate occasions, my teachers thankfully saw promise in me, and refused to let me give up. I continued to study and ended up excelling in my final primary exams. My community graciously came together and raised $143, which, in 2002, was enough to send me to secondary school. Ironically, the very people who helped me go to school when my family had nothing, ended up turning against me due to my sterling performance in my exams. And, so, without the continued support of my community, I had few options. In order to finish school, my brother and I both pulled together all the money we could get our hands on, and barely managed to raise enough to finish what I had started. Knowing firsthand how difficult it can be to simply attend school, without factoring in the immense effort needed to complete a student’s studies, is what has really pushed me to get involved in organizations like GO!. I believe that education is the key for these children to break the cycle of poverty. For me, it was my schooling combined with the promise of God’s love.
Global Orphan Relief has been partnered with the Fortune Learners Centre since January 2020 based on our visit to the school in 2019. We are honored to be able to work with Charles and his team at this community school in the Kayole district of Nairobi, Kenya.
Today we serve 33 orphaned children within this partnership. These children are served and funded through our Scholarship Initiative. Fortune Learners Centre has been serving the vulnerable children of Kayole since 2013. To join our efforts to send orphaned children to school see our 2020 Scholarship Fund page for more details!
