Despite Hunger Gap & COVID-19 Constraints, GO-Sponsored Schools Continue Saving Over 2,000 Children In South Sudan,
By Thiik-Awet, in Aweil South Sudan
Despite global outbreak of pandemic disease, COVID-19 and hunger crises in South Sudan, Global Orphans Relief (GO) sponsored schools have continued to strive and excel in delivering the needed humanitarian services to South Sudan’s Children in Schools they support with feeding programmes in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Aweil. This programme is supporting at least 2,455 children for three schools of Adoor and Lueth-Wek in Aweil East County and Beliek in Aweil South County of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State in South Sudan.
Under this programme, children have improved socially, economically, spiritually and academically which make their future more promising.
The implementing agency, Christ Mission to World whose mandate is to implement donated items gives all required guidance to these young vulnerable children whose future looks bright if all continue as per plan.
In South Sudan, there is an annual hunger gap period which usually occurs between June to August where hunger strikes every household whether rich or poor or whether with low or high-income family, during these hunger gaps, the children have been fed to the best expectations and no reports of starvation among the bordering communities to these locations since the children get free feeding in these centres. These children whose status are either orphaned or the family which cannot afford food, this feeding has greatly impacted their lives and children upon visit have had success stories to tell after being supported.
An orphaned pupil, Kuan Deng Kuan,13 years old who has been benefiting from Lueth-Wek Community school gives sincere gratitude to the GO for being generous in supporting their school. “I and my fellow pupils are happy and grateful for this support we’re getting so far from our donors. We have totally changed from being malnourished to well-fed children and now staying healthy and learning lots of things for our future.” Kuan expressed this during an assessment visit to the GO!-sponsored schools last week.
Joseph Mou Akook, aged 11 of Adoor Orphanage Primary school also pledges their blessings to their donors and says they’re blessed to have GO!-initiative supporting their school and that they will one day hope to do the same to the other needy people once they become educated. “I can only request God to bless our donors for more blessings so that they get more resources of continuing to support our feeding programme and be able to eradicate the illiteracy in South Sudan. This is indeed more than a blessing to us and our community. We’re hopeful that their support will not be taken for granted but preciously be put in action through faith, love and humility for doing the same once we finish.” Mou added when asked about their feeling towards the funds they receive from GO! in their feeding programme.
In partnership with Christ Mission to the World, Global Orphans Relief (GO!) is funding three community schools in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, South Sudan with feeding programme, where over 2,000 children, directly benefit from this project. The schools get school meals on monthly basis to cater meals from Monday to Friday every week.
Despite restrictions and closure of schools due to COVID-19 by the South Sudan’s government, these three schools have not been affected since communities have written waiver to have their children be fed by the school during hunger gap in the country. Due to free feeding and spiritual counseling, turnout has ever been increasing as hunger shaken community surrounding these locations of schools.
In break down statistics, Lueth-wek increased their figure from 235 to 850 in just less than 3 months, while Adoor comes second with 840 pupils and Beliek with 765 pupils respectively.
