Dream School Update | May 2019

UPDATE PROVIDED FROM OUR PARTNERS IN LIKASI, DR CONGO:  

This program came out of a visit to the DRC by our GO! team in 2009. Shortly after our visit we asked our partners in-country to survey the local community near Likasi for orphans in need. We also wanted to know how we could best help these children.

The survey came back with a list of 200 confirmed orphaned children, and overwhelmingly the families simply asked for assistance with school fees. Our in-country partner then surveyed the local school to make sure that the children would receive proper instruction. The Dream School program was born from this effort.

Meet Kwanga Gombo. He is 13 years old, and in the 5th Grade. After his father was murdered he had no opportunity to continue his studies. The Dream School project has changed his life for the better.

Meet Mujinga Thiyombo Conssollate. Both of her parents passes away from unknown illnesses leaving her with no chance to attend school.  She is 12 years old and in the 4th grade thanks to the Dream School.  Mujinga started school at 8 years old.

There are 171 orphans who receive scholarships for their education through this project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.  The courses they are learning include; mathematics, French, science, computer science, geography, drawing, shop class, home economics, and mechanics for the secondary school.  In addition, the children share in Bible study, and praise and worship.

We can see real opportunity for orphaned children to stay with extended family and also have the availability to attend school. There are many benefits to the child to be with extended family and not be relocated to an orphanage simply because the extended family has limited resources. In addition, there are real possibilities for the cycle of poverty to be broken given that these children will receive an education.
