Background
We were connected with Charles Owino for many years and had a chance to visit Fortune Learners’ Centre (FLC) based on an unplanned visit to Nairobi in 2019. Based on our assessment at that time, there was a good work underway at FLC, and this was a community of great need.
FLC was founded in 2013 by Charles Owino and ten peers from the slums of Soweto, who were previously working as teachers in various schools. Having witnessed how many schools deny vulnerable children who cannot afford tuition, they made it their cause to better the lives of these bright, yet poor children; some of whom had to resort to begging or street activities just to survive.
Fortune Learners’ Centre
Our partnership has enabled the school in increase their enrollment of orphan children as these childen have been empowered to attend school through our combined effort.
We have had the opportunity to spend time at FLC on many occasions. In fact, we have gone the extra step to visit families in their homes to gain a better understanding of their challenges.
Opportunities for work are limited in this community. Families with orphan children are especially vulnerable as these families are typically bigger with a more complex family dynamic.
Future plans may include upgrading the facilities because the classrooms are very small when considering the number of students. The school as no running water and is not connected to the power grid.
There is a vision for a second floor that would include a computer lab and additional classrooms.
While the current facilities would be described modest at best, the teachers are dedicated and care for these children. Often times when dealing with vulnerable populations, the teachers care, and consideration goes beyond the classroom to insure the wellbeing of the child.
