Background

We were fortunate to meet Mulu and Tamrat of Life Center Ethiopia over a hosted dinner in Denver in 2021.

We were impressed with the story of where God had brought them over the years to serve orphan children, and of course we shared our heart for orphan children in common.

Ethiopia was an area of interest for us, and they had a project that they thought we could “grow into” together, so we began in 2022 by supporting this effort in Sekota.

Ethiopia Food Aid

Nutrition: In general, 29% of children under the age of five are underweight, and 9% are severely underweight in Ethiopia.

Malnutrition remains to be a major public health concern in Ethiopia. It is highly prevalent particularly among infants and young children, who are vulnerable to both macro and micro-nutrient deficiencies. Though malnutrition refers to both under- and over-nutrition conditions, the main malnutrition conditions of public health concern in Ethiopia are the ones related to under-nutrition, namely anemia, stunting, wasting, and underweight, the prevalence of each condition being above global averages. Malnutrition is of various negative consequences on the health and wellbeing of children. It has been linked to high child morbidity and mortality, poor cognitive, physical, and psychosocial development.

Care:  The Care component of the project includes food aid to orphan children and to widow-led households that care for these children. This primarily consists of staple food supplies for the household each month.

Geography

Ethiopia is a country roughly twice the size of Texas with 116.5 million people. Where we serve with Life Center Ethiopia in Sekota, the town is 2,266 meters above sea level. Ethiopia is a landlocked country located in the Horn of Africa and is surrounded by six countries.

While Ethiopia enjoys one of the fastest growing economies in Sub-Saharan Africa, the country is regarded as poor with high rates of poverty, poor respect for human rights, and a literacy rate of only 49%. Agriculture is the largest economic sector in Ethiopia, accounting for 36% of the country's gross domestic product as of 2020.

Ethiopia’s history stretches back to Biblical times, and apart from a five-year occupation by Italy, has never been colonized.

Project Costs & Approach

We are encouraged by the aid that is being provisioned through Life Center Ethiopia and hope to grow this partnership over the years to feed more orphan children.

Our 2024 plan for the Ethiopia Food Aid Mission Project will require $14,640, which will provide 43,200 meals via our Nutrition Initiative.

Please prayerfully consider how you might support this mission project.
