I am Charles Owino and I am the Director at Fortune Learners Centre (FLC), a nonprofit community-based organization dedicated to serving orphans and vulnerable children. Our school is located in Kayole, an informal settlement in Nairobi-Kenya. I am happy to introduce you to one of the orphan children served by FLC in partnership with Global Orphan Relief.

My name is Quincy Ochieng and I am 18 years old. I joined Fortune Learners’ Centre (FLC) in the year 2014. At that time, I was living with my Aunty Lilian after the sudden death of my parents. It was fortunate for me because in 2013 I was out of school after the passing of my aunt’s husband, and my former school couldn’t understand her pleas, so they would send me home daily for school fees. Because of this I missed exams and eating was a privilege. At the time having porridge for supper meant the world to me.

I am among the few people in the world who had no chance to see my parents because my mum gave birth to me when she was a child (14 years) when she was still in Primary School. I never knew my father. My mum died when I was 7 months old and this meant my grandmother was to take me. She then passed-away a few years later and my third care giver was my aunt. These changes in my guardianship affected my early school days in a negative way.

One morning as were going to Church we came across FLC and as we passed my aunt promised to enquire about the school. It was as if she was directed God to the school, which later turned-out to be a big blessing since I got a chance to attend after being out of school for a year.

I could now attend school, but I lacked essential scholastic education materials as well as food until June 2019 when GO! visited our school. This is when things changed for the better. We did our exams in high spirits and passed with flying colors. Come January 2020, I got GO! Scholarship to join Lwak Girls High School, one of the most prestigious schools in the country.

There was no single day I was sent out of school for the lack of fees or any other need. When some of my classmates were being sent home due to huge balances that they had, that made me to work harder because I lacked nothing. I was among the few students who continued with their studies at home during the Covid-19 pandemic period, thanks to GO!. Last year in 2023, I did my examination K.C.S.E (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) and now I'm waiting for the results which will be out before the end of this month. I am confident that it will be a positive result that will open my way to support my ailing aunt.

Through support made available to me through the FLC/GO! partnership, I have been able to acquire skills from different sectors, I have grown spiritually, and I now aspire to be an accountant. I never knew that I was going to advance this far in my education and it only shows that GO! and its supporters are kind-hearted people who choose to sponsor children from different regions to fulfill their potential. Thank you so much for all that you have been able to do for me.

It is my wish that the good Lord may continue granting you people a good life to continue supporting the orphans from different parts of the world and I know the reward from God will be granted to you.
