We Are Impacting Girl Child Education

GO! Sponsorship in South Sudan has impacted Girl Child Education

Following a six-year sponsorship of nutritional and biblical support in South Sudan, children, mostly orphans who have been benefiting from these school-based and church-based support have testified to have been impacted greatly in their villages and schools.

At Lueth-wek, there are newly admitted girls who travel some miles away from their villages to come and join the GO! sponsored school. They say they're joining because their peer groups (colleagues) have told them how they have been impacted in their lives and families (households).

Elizabeth Akon Akol, a fourteen-year girl at Lueth-wek Primary school says her parents have officially been converted to Christianity and that they have known the rights of girl child education. She is happy to be part of the school that cares most about vulnerable children, especially orphans.

“I am very happy in my life because I have been lucky to be part of this wonderful school where our rights are respected. I am happy to be here also because they offer food which saves us from running away from the school due to hunger like other schools,” Elizabeth explains.

According to Akon, getting food and biblical support has made her addicted to coming to school and church, hoping to have a better future.

Though forceful and early marriages have dilapidated most schoolgirl children in South Sudan, Akon believes her future will be different because she has known her rights and now that her family has allowed her to continue with her education, she sees no more chain of poverty in her family.

Akon is currently in grade six at Lueth-wek Orphanage school and wishes to study Aviation in her career.

In most parts of South Sudan, early and forced marriages are the biggest challenges which are limiting opportunities for girl child education as they risk being removed from schools and married off to any potential suiters who can meet family’s dowry demands.

We have served in South Sudan since 2016 and have provided an estimated 1.2 million meals impacting more than 3,200 children in South Sudan. The scale of this initiative has grown by over 7 times since our launch in 2016, and this growth is driven by the near-famine conditions and other socio-economic challenges in this country.

In cooperation with two partners, Kids for the Kingdom & Christ Mission to the World, we have invested $130,000 in these three school sites with additional infrastructure since Q3 2020. We have provided for clean water, kitchens, storerooms, and latrines, all which allows for cost-effective distribution of food aid in these communities. We are thankful for these partners that make this work possible.

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work through local partners in each country that provides oversight and distribution of care.
