Workshop Summary Report | On the 23rd of April, Global Orphan Relief-Kenya, in conjunction with Graceful Aging Initiative (CBO), held a joint workshop that brought together Kariobangi Cheshire Home and Goshen Children Centre to create an intergenerational forum where children and the elderly could learn from each other.

The event was held at Kariobangi Cheshire Home (Nyumba Ya Wazee). It is a Home and a permanent residence for over 26 seniors and a daycare program for about 200 elderly from the neighboring slum areas. Franciscan Missionary Sisters for Africa have been taking care of the home.

Goshen Children Home is an orphan care center catering to 54 children from Githurai 45 Estate.

The program began from 9 AM to 2 PM. The children and the elderly had the Word of God of what it means to pass through different stages of life. The elders and the children made presentations. I (Isaiah Kimani) introduced the Global Orphan Relief and its latest initiative, the Great Commandment Workshop.

Tiffany, representing the Graceful Aging Initiative, introduced her organization and its programs. Lastly, there was a session of taking photos, tree planting, and Cake Cutting before the event ended. Both the orphan children and the seniors were encouraged. One could see the joy on their faces. It was the ideal moment to demonstrate the love of Christ showing Pure Religion in action (James 1:27).

Global Orphan Relief supported the event by providing breakfast, lunch, and evening tea for all the people present. The event was a success. The children had time to interact with the elders and ask them about life transitions. They were also able to learn the challenges that older people face in their lives.

The adult well-wishers present made donations to the two recipient organizations; Kariobangi Cheshire Home and Goshen Children Home.

Church Mobilization is our newest initiative launched in February 2022.  We are currently working with local area churches to co-host Great Commandment Workshops where we bring together multiple subject matter experts to discuss the why and how to serve the poor generally, and orphan children specifically.  We will track the impact of children served through this effort to justify continued investment; however, we have no plans to be funding the care of children through this initiative.

Beyond the financial commitment of the workshops, this effort is to be indigenous, self-propagating, and self-supporting.  Our objective is to engage local churches to expand our GO! network, mobilize the church body to serve orphaned children, and to advance the Kingdom through demonstrating the Gospel to others.  Through these workshops we are:

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005. We have accomplished this work to date through local partners in each country that provides oversight and distribution of care. As of April we serve 2,312 orphan children in DR Congo, Kenya, Pakistan, South Sudan, and Zambia within our Home-based Care, Scholarship, Nutrition, and Church Mobilization Initiatives.
