Pure Religion: The Why & How of Caring for Orphan Children
by Scott Nordstrom
I continue to receive good feedback since the release of my first book earlier this year. I would love for you to get yourself a copy and hear what you think…
You will find stories form my experiences within the book that I hope will somehow encourage you. The following is an excerpt from the WHY section of the book:
…Corporately, the scripture is clear as to our mandate. We go into this a bit deeper later in this material, but just let me say that there is no better way to demonstrate the love of the Father than by serving an orphan child. I am partial to the work that is being achieved by Global Orphan Relief, but there are many worthy orphan care ministries accomplishing many good things on the behalf of orphaned children around the world. James describes this as Pure Religion.
While I do believe that serving orphan children is a mandate to the church, a command if you will, we should also be making individual choices to adhere to the scripture in terms of our service to the vulnerable—the orphaned child. This includes our time, talent, and yes, financial support to address the needs of these children. I do not believe that this is something as followers of Jesus we somehow defer to the church we attend. Let me remind you, this is Pure Religion according to the scriptures.
As I sat in fellowship with a Pastor friend from Zambia in 2008, I think he said it best, “What Global Orphan Relief does for the orphan children is like scratching the back of God”. What a beautiful picture! I do believe that what we are accomplishing together is good and beautiful in the Kingdom. It is Pure Religion!
To date, we have peaked at serving 3,938 vulnerable children and believe that God has given us a vision to Feeding 5,000, which would include children in all of our initiatives. We have been encouraged to see God growing our ministry to serve His precious children, and since August 2014 we have grown from serving just 90 children.
