Pure Religion: The Why & How of Caring for Orphan Children
by Scott Nordstrom
I wanted to let you know that I did finally get my first book published based on help from my editor Mark Holmes. This really is a book of more “Why” than “How” to serve orphaned children, but there are several helpful chapters that will point you in the right direction.
I have started and almost finished numerous books, but after several challenges from Mark, I buckled down and put words on paper so to speak.
You will find several stories within the book that will hopefully encourage you in some way. This is an excerpt from the Introduction section of the book:
…Ten fingers, ten toes, a head of fuzzy peach hair—our little miracle was perfect in every way, an angel on earth for the fifteen days that we shared with her. Due to a myriad of health issues that cut her life short, my wife and I felt truly helpless. We are trained to protect our children, teach them, nourish them, and watch them grow. With so much love in our hearts that we were no longer able to share, God called us to place it somewhere new.
I cannot say that I was looking for something more to do as part of my faith journey back in 2005, but I was fully attentive as our world was rocked with the challenges, we experienced with our daughter Faith. I was reading through Purpose Driven Life at the time, and as I read through this material God was providing me real-life object lessons that played out during this time with Faith. He was beginning to reveal to us through this experience the plight of orphaned children.
In June, nearly a month after our Faith had passed away, we attended an informational meeting on international adoption opportunities. The Father used this meeting to bring attention (at least with me) to the plight of his children—specifically orphaned children. Despina was dialed in on how and where we might add to our family, and I was now aware of the needs of an orphan child. There seemed to be so many of them in need of a home. I was just beginning to understand the enormity of the need and began to consider how we could help more than just one child with adoption. What I learned that day made me emotionally distraught. Of course, during this meeting, I was reminded of my own loss, but more than anything I was grieved with the fact that there were so many children without a mom or dad. God was stirring something deep inside of me.
