Recent Attack on Three Villages in Aweil East

As reported earlier this week from our partner Christ Mission to the World (CMW)

Aweil, South Sudan

On Wednesday last week heavily armed Misseriya Arab militia men from North Sudan attacked Yieth Pabol, Malou and Machar Villages in Aweil East, killing 30 civilians and children. The attackers wounded many others, and several houses were set ablaze. The armed attack was reportedly perpetrated by a large number of Misseriya Arab militia men riding on horses and armed with guns. Aweil East borders North Sudan and is actually the entry to Sudan from South Sudan through the primary road that passes through the county. The attackers also burned stores that contained sorghum and other food crops and drove away several livestock from the attacked villages. During the attack, children were also abducted from the attacked villages. Our church in Yieth Pabol was also attacked and burnt down.

The County Commissioner of Aweil East County has confirmed that an approximated number of 150 households have been displaced from the attacked villages of Yieth Pabol, Malou and Machar and are now living in other villages in makeshift structures and some are camping under trees. The situation in which the displaced persons are in is very terrible and complex as they have lost everything they had before they were attacked. The condition of the people is so traumatic, they are left without food, utensils, shelters, clothing and water. The situation is very bad especially for children, women and elderly people who are sleeping without shelters and blankets to cover them from the cold. The area is now very cold, and the displaced people are exposed to mosquitos and diseases. There is also need to provide clean water to the displaced persons by drilling 3 boreholes in the place where they are camping.

CMW has begun making appeals to aid organizations to help with food, non-food items and drilling of 3 boreholes for the displaced persons in Aweil East. The project will target 150 vulnerable displaced households in Aweil East. Please pray with us that they will be successful in providing aid as the Father directs to these displaced people.

We have served in South Sudan with CMW since 2016 and have provided an estimated 482,100 meals impacting 3,162 vulnerable children in South Sudan in 2021. Since our time serving with CMW we have served an estimated 1.2 million meals total in South Sudan. The scale of this initiative has grown by over 4 times since our launch in 2016, and this growth is driven by the near-famine conditions and other socio-economic challenges in this country.

In 2020, we began to work with CMW to receive orphan children that did not have a home or any other means of support. We now serve over 100 orphan children in Aweil through the Light House Orphanage to provide assistance to children who need help to have a home.

Christ Mission to the World’s Bishop Garang, oversees 100 churches and 20,000 parishioners in the Aweil area. Bishop Garang grew up in the area as a boy and now serves the many physical and spiritual needs of the people.

Global Orphan Relief (GO) has been serving orphaned children since 2005.  We have accomplished this work to date through local partners in each country that provides oversight and distribution of care.
