Feeding 5,000 | South Sudan
Children Are Queuing up at GO! Sponsored Schools As Hunger Looms and Meals becoming “Scarce” in Households.

AWEIL, SOUTH SUDAN
As hunger is looming at every corner of South Sudan with skyrocketing prices and low supplies, low-earning residents, or those without sources of income, are finding life difficult in South Sudan’s Northern Bahr el Ghazal State. People opt to take leaves of trees to make a meal in an effort to survive.
In this worsening period, those who have been surviving on humanitarian aid have complications and no hopes for a cross-over to next year as economy hardens on them.
At Lueth-wek, primary school, children queue every morning to be served with Milk tea and some Mandazi, while they wait for breakfast at midday. Standing in line alone for one to two hours is not easy as it creates pressure on the cooks to make sure they come every morning as earlier as at 6am to make these preparations.
According to school management, children have been screened to categories of “malnourished” and those lacking food at their house but are healthy. The priority is given to those with “malnourished” status.
Philip Piol, the headmaster for Lueth-wek, praises the nutrition support and says the food provided has impacted the lives of the host community and that there will be no “starvation cases” in those particular locations where GO! is implementing their Nutrition Initiative.to provide us school meals project.
These children’s (beneficiaries) ages in Lueth-wek range from 3-7 years (referencing most of the children in the video posted above). They have been accustomed to coming to school daily (Monday to Friday) as the only means for survival during these lean times.
According to the humanitarian report released last month, South Sudan is looming in a serious hunger strike as the country battles its economic stability and straddling. Here the UNCHR report for reference. https://news.un.org/en/story/2021/03/1087492
————————————————
In the first five months of 2021 we have experienced a dramatic increase in the number of children coming to our partner schools to receive meals. In the first five months of this year we have provided an estimated 261,300 meals impacting 2,613 children. The scale of this initiative has grown by more than 206% when compared to 2020 when we served just an estimated 85,160 meals to 852 vulnerable children.
Education in South Sudan is facing enormous challenges with the lack of qualified teachers, and little funding to effectively operate local schools. Most schools lack basic requirements like classrooms, toilets, food, and clean drinking water. Even with sub-standard education available to these children, attendance is not guaranteed for these based on the resources available today to a growing number of children.
Plans for 2021 is to provide nutrition to more vulnerable children in the Aweil area, increasing the number of children served as compared to 2020. In cooperation with multiple partners (Kids for the Kingdom & Christ Mission to the World), we have developed these school sites with infrastructure over the last 6-months by investing $109,200 during this time for kitchens, storerooms, and latrines.
Today we serve these precious children with our partner Christ Mission to the World who are the hands and feet on the ground, and through this partnership we will serve an estimated 52,920 meals at three village schools in the Aweil area this month.
